Artist of the Week...Zero 7.

I. Their story: From Britain, these two blokes combine mellow grooves with various melodic voices that result in a cornucopia of listening pleasure. In all seriousness, they are really...really good. The thing, for me, that makes them unique and fun is that they utilize different vocal artists giving the feeling of a soundtrack on each album...but with the consistency one looks for in a talented artist....somewhat like the 90's group Everything But The Girl....but much better. Theirs is the kind of music that you could use as background for a nice evening with someone special...or a nice solitary drive.
II. My story: I was first introduced to these guys a couple of years ago by the grand testudineous(by the way, thanks.). Always in search of music that captures without being obsequious, I was incredibly pleased. I've gone through a process of discovery, as I do with most bands that initially intrigue... and the journey has been worth it so far. Few groups/artists deliver on a consistent basis...from album to album...but these guys do. I've included a couple videos of songs that give a general representation of the disparate sounds of the band...and two of my favorites. Ladies and gentlemen...Zero 7.

EBTG were around longer before the 90's; that's when they started changing up their sound.

I'll take The Thievery Corporation over Z7, though.

that should read, "long before the 90's..."

thoughts for the bastard:

1. i'm really not all that up on ebtg. i dig their sound, generally, but my knowledge is limited to just a few albums.

2. i have no idea who the thievery corporation is. is there anything you'd suggest i start with...if i were to check them out?

3. i've heard that there is a french band that is similar to z7...but precedes them. drop the knowledge on me...if you got it.

yeah, check out some of EBTG's early works and you'll hear a huge difference. Tracey's awesome voice, however, is a constant.

as far as the TC are concerned: I started with abductions & reconstructions(a remix album), then sounds from the thievery hi-fi, then on to the mirror conspiracy and the richest man in babylon. That should keep you occupied until you get up to their most recent releases.

herodotus, the French group Zero 7 is frequently compared to is Air, also a duo. I only know one Thievery Corporation song---"Lebanese Blonde"---courtesy of Zach Braff, via the Garden State soundtrack. I don't care much for it, although tamboura and sitar are generally always welcome with me.

sb and testud:

1. i have the garden state album(ex-girlfriend influence)...and know that song...just didn't realize it was ttc. i dig it.

2. i went on youtube...great invention...and checked out air. pretty good. of course, i'm familiar with 'sexy boy', but that's it. come on everybody..we've got some listening to do!

Air did a nice job with the soundtrack to The Virgin Suicides. Got some of it on vinyl, somewhere.

"Lebanese Blonde" was an okay song, but it was damn near played-out before Mr. Braff got ahold of it. He should have called Micah for advice on that soundtrack/compilation.
